The women that I have met on the team, as well as women I have met across the state while racing are a unique set of women. They are strong, independent, know what they want and aren't afraid to ask for it. That is what I love about racing the most-the people that I have met along the way. People who race are committed, passionate, and just a great group of people to know. Beyond the people-riding my bike is just plain fun! I love speed-so racing crits on my road bike or zooming through the trails on my mountain bike are my favorite activities. The best part of racing crits is that every race is unique-even though we are basically racing in a circle. It is always a game of cat and mouse and requires your full concentration.

One of the highlights of my 2015 season was my first race-Kings Day Crit in Holland. I didn't race much in 2014 (after racing A LOT in 2013) and I was afraid that I may have forgotten how to race altogether. I also had major fears about my fitness level and was afraid that I might get dropped immediately. As I held on to the group and weaved around the corners, the feel of the road, the turns, the women close around me came back. Surging when I need to hold on, hiding in a windbreak when I am almost at my limit...all of a sudden I realized I did remember! The feeling was so awesome, tears came to my eyes out of the pure excitement of racing again.

This season I hope to focus on staying in shape and entering a race or two as I can. I work full time as a social worker, am going back to school in the fall to get my master's degree, and am a mom of two awesome kids, so I don't have as much time to spend on my bike to train for racing as I used to. But, to everything there is a season and a time to every purpose-so I am sure there will be another time in life to refocus my energies on my bike. For now, it is more about fitting it in when I can in a fun, non stressful way.
Sandra Dunn2018-10-26T15:49:13+00:002024-03-28T03:59:26+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/sandra-dunn/
What I like about being on my bike is the freedom and absorbing the beauty around us. Also the challenge that it takes to get up a steep hill, jump a log or just to hold on in a pace line. I figure if I get get through that and survive I can get through daily work life.

I like riding with Hagerty and the cycling community its being around like minded citizens: health, community and encouragement.

My first memory of learning how to ride a bike I was 7-8 years old my brother put me on a bike on the top of our steep driveway. His advice turn right at the end of the driveway so you don't hit the neighbors Corvette.

Every ride or race is an accomplishment its feeling the fear and doing it anyway. It's exhilarating!
Off the bike my biggest accomplishment is Grace my offspring. She is hilarious!

When I'm not riding I'm with family, friends, my dogs and the team at Imprès salon spa est. 1990
Something you might not know: I traveled around the country training hairdressers with a company (Trevor Sorbie) based out of London and Rare by Ruth Roche a New York Academy for advance technics.

Keep moving!
Velvet Batteiger2018-10-26T15:48:02+00:002024-03-29T12:00:35+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/velvet-batteiger/
I love biking. I feel most alive when I’m flying through the woods on my mountain bike. Just ask, I’m the one that is known to smile all the time. My favorite is mountain biking, but I also enjoy gravel, cyclocross and fat bike races. I hop on my road bike for training, group, just for fun or events like the M22 Challenge.

I am so incredibly proud and grateful to be a member of our Hagerty Cycling Team. This family of cyclists is an amazing group of classy athletes. We continue to support and challenge each other to be our very best. We enjoy the energy, camaraderie and friendships. We inspire each other and continue to build knowledge to further develop us as athletes and kind citizens. We give back and volunteer for local nonprofits organizations in our community.

Through cycling in our awesome and inspiring community, I have made many new friendships, the kind of people that you hope to be friends with for life. I also love other adventure sports like stand up paddleboarding (SUP) - for fun and the occasional race, boating, swimming, nordic skate skiing, alpine skiing, camping, hiking, roller skating, ice skating and walking my dogs.

This year, for me, it’s about trying new races, getting faster, more climbing, more rides, increasing technical skills on the single track and having a ton of fun training. “Gears not Brakes”. I had a blast at the 2016 Shorts Fat Bike Race Series and plan to get into more fat bike riding/racing. My first Barry-Roubaix was challenging this Spring. I’ll be back for the X20, a few fall races on the horizon and definitely gearing up for Iceman, my 3rd year.
Erica Weitzman2018-10-26T15:47:00+00:002024-03-29T12:36:28+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/erica-weitzman/
Training for and completing my first bicycle adventure of riding across the U.S., from Los Angeles, CA to Boston, MA, sparked my passion for cycling. I have subsequently completed a second cross country trip from Portland, ME to Jacksonville, FL, and raced traditional dirt and road races as well as 12 and 24 hour endurance races. Since my marriage to my best friend and fellow cyclist in 2006, I have had the opportunity to travel across the country in our motorcoach and ride with and race against cyclists from every corner of the U.S.
Marie Voss2018-10-26T15:46:21+00:002024-03-28T06:42:41+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/marie-voss/
1. As John Muir said, "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." I think the same thing about spending time riding and racing my bike! Their is nothing like the euphoria of being outside riding in this amazing area and community that we live in!

2. Our family has been grateful for the Hagerty Cycling team and the support they have given our son Braiden. He has been thriving on his bike! I couldn't be more delighted to join this amazing group of athletes that are dedicated, hard working and eager to help others grow!

3. This past year was an exciting and unexpected year for me on my bike! I was on the podium for all the events I raced!

4. I am a proud mother of two. Braiden 13 and Kora 12. We love being active and spending as much time outdoors as possible. In my "spare time" I love to cook and bake and I'm an avid reader. I get the pleasure of spending my days as a Montessori teacher at The Children's House.
Susan Donnelly2018-10-26T15:45:00+00:002024-03-27T05:03:24+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/susan-donnelly/
I love what I get from riding, the freedom, comaraderie, going fast, winning(though I haven't exactly won much) Being on a team with people of the same interests, and being able to train with them, it will make you faster and have instant friends. You learn a lot from your teammates.

I recently relocated to Northville for a job opportunity at Ford Motor Co.where I coordinate protype builds for testing. I always wear my Hagerty kit when I train and do group rides.Everyone knows Hagerty. it is always fun riding the Wednesday women's ride- we all have a good time-we are not there to race but to be more social with women off all abilities. it is a great way to introduce cycling to women who may have never ridden in a group before. I am mainly a road racer but have taken up mtn biking and more as there are trails nearby, also lots of gravel training rides with new friends. I want to cross race in the near future also. My biggest accomplishment is when came in third in the omnium at the Tour de Mtn Pleasant (TT, road, and crit)- I won money and trophies- Criteriums are a blast and hope to do more next year-this is where teamwork really works. I am proud to represent Hagerty at all the events I attend.

I also love gardening, spending time with loved ones, and my cats.
Tiffany Tor2018-10-26T15:43:54+00:002024-03-29T12:46:26+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/tiffany-tor/
This is my very first year on the Hagerty Cycling Team, and I have been blown away with amount of support and encouragement I have seen from this group in such a short amount of time!

I first fell in love with bikes about 5 years ago after completing the 300 mile Wish-A-Mile tour with some co-workers. I did this on a $200 hybrid bike from Wal-Mart, so needless to say I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I thought it would be a one-time thing- something fun to do for a good cause. But the energy and excitement was contagious, and I haven’t stopped riding since. It has become my #1 therapy, both mentally and physically.

Up to this point, my riding experiences have been more casual than competitive. I have attended several races a year as a spectator to support my fiancé, Kyle, but have only raced a handful of times myself. This was partially due to a torn ACL that took me 3 years to finally get fixed. Now that I’m recovering from the surgery, I am beyond excited to really push myself and see just what these legs are capable of. Move over, Chloe Woodruff. Here I come! Hey, a girl can dream can’t she?

Other than cycling, I also enjoy snowboarding, wakeboarding, boating, hiking, eating tacos, and spending time with my fiance and my Puerto Rican rescue pooch, Kevin.
Erin Ferguson2018-10-26T15:42:38+00:002024-03-29T02:49:46+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/erin-ferguson/
Who would've thought that a simple bicycle purchase, and a chance encounter 10 years ago would change the direction of my life. Back then, my idea of a bike ride was a leisurely ride down the TART trail. Then, I was introduced to the world of racing by working at the Iceman. My competitive fire that I nurtured in team sports growing up, had been rekindled.

I couldn't live in a more perfect place to learn the fine art of bike racing, and eventually triathlon, which has taken me places I never could have dreamed. I love being able to ride out from my back door and be in one of the most beautiful places in America. I love the rush of cresting a hill and seeing the lakes, orchards, and sometimes wildlife that most people miss while sitting in a car. Being part of Team Hagerty has heightened the exhilaration. I learn something new every ride, and being part of a team of some of the most exceptional athletes in the region pushes me in ways I never thought possible and am proud to call such like minded people, friends.

My specialty is triathlon. I have been participating in tris for the last 9 years, but competing in them really only for the last 2, when I was finally able to put the pieces together. I had my best season ever last summer with podium finishes at most races. Last year was also my proudest race (so far) in my career, when I was able to compete for Team USA in the Long Course Triathlon World Championships in Sweden. I qualified again for Team USA this year, which will be held in Oklahoma City in September.

My race season is just getting started as I come off a personal best 1/2 marathon time this past weekend in Marquette, at the Hope Starts Here Challenge (May 7).

I rode it everywhere with no helmet and not a care in the world. Although my bike has changed and I’ve added many to my fleet, I still love to ride my bike just as much as I did as a little girl and I plan on riding and race until I can’t. In the immortal words of teammate Hal Bevier, “You're gonna have to shot me off this bike.” I couldn’t agree more.

Riding with my Hagerty teammates is one of the greatest pleasures and honors, I have had in my life. They are all great people who push each other to try harder, laugher harder and achieve more on and off the bike.

Outside of biking, I am also a triathlete, swimmer, skier, librarian, mom, model, social media goddess, prankster, poet, ghost writer, volunteer, party organizer and friend. I’m not sure what’s in store for racing in 2016, but 2015 rocked!

I wasn’t keen on the idea of riding on the road with cars. However, one day, I came home and Jacqui said, ‘daddy bought you a bike’. I guess Mark knew me well figuring that once he got me on the bike, I’d love it. ...and I did. We road with a group of TC friends for a few years, soon there after, Sue Vigland gave me a shout and I’ve been riding on the team ever since.

There’s nothing quite like riding in the woods for me, however. I can be by myself or with cycling buddies. We hop on the bikes and we’re off and upon return, I always feel high, ready to take on the world again. How do you explain it? And the coolest thing? With few exceptions, always a Hagerty team member or other lover of cycling (i.e. Don Chunkle) ready to play, riding with that grin on their face. So much to learn, scary and fun at the same time. I enjoy the team rides and training opportunities. Teammates cheer you on at races, add humor (very important) share tips and strategies and help pick you up, literally and figuratively speaking, when things don’t go as planned.

Getting 3rd at the State Road Race Championship in Marquette and 2nd at the Cherry Roubaix my first year on the Hagerty Team was pretty sweet (great coaching by fellow team member and expert racer Scott Pryde!). But probably the best experience of all was this year at Iceman because my daughter Krissi, herself a great athlete was there to bring me to ktown, knowing just what to do and say and there to celebrate a great race result at the end.

I’m a speech pathologist that works with students with cognitive impairments. After 25+ years, I can say that I am humbled to have had the opportunity to both teach and learn from these children and their parents. When I’m not working, cycling or (skate) skiing, you can find me in the kitchen, as I love to cook and eat, sponge on our German Short Hair poopy, Bella or watching college bball and Red Wing hockey. My bags are always packed…love to travel!
Morgan Johnson2018-10-26T15:39:02+00:002024-03-28T14:53:52+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/morgan-johnson/
What do I love about racing and riding? I like the fact that you can ride everywhere you go, and you see the world from a different perspective, every time! One of the main things I like is that I am always challenging myself to be a better rider, testing my limits and seeing where I can improve for the next race! The planet looks different from a bike or a pair of skis than it does from a car or an airplane.

I am new to the Hagerty family this year, but I can say without a doubt that I wouldn’t want to ride for anyone else! The minute you put the Hagerty kit on, you become a part of the family, everyone seems to work together for the cause of the sport and the community!

As much as I enjoy riding my bikes, there are many other aspects of life that I like to take in. Growing up I was taught that it is better to be well rounded and know a little bit about everything, which is what makes me not scared to always try something new and with an open mind. In my spare time I enjoy refinishing old furniture, running, hiking, camping, skiing and being a girl (going shopping). I am very lucky to have found my career that I am extremely passionate about by age 25, I am a National Account Coordinator for a company called Gemba Marketing. It’s one of those big city jobs, in my favorite small town; working with national and international brands to advertise their product/service to the right demographics.

You will rarely find me sitting still because when I am not working, running, or biking I am either downhill ski coaching, or planning for the next Conquer The Village Mountain Bike Race. I ski raced from age 5-18 and now I coach in Austria every fall and at Hickory Hills during the rest of the season.

If you can’t already tell, I love life and everything that it has to offer, I truly believe that the purpose of life is to live it and where you invest your time, you are investing your life. What better place to invest your life than with family, friends and on the bike! I enjoy challenging myself and setting new goals, because I’ve learned that being strong, especially as a woman- is empowering!

I’m looking forward to an awesome season of races and getting to know everyone on the team!
Beth Collins2018-10-26T15:37:51+00:002024-03-29T01:37:21+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/beth-collins/
1- What do you love about riding and racing your bicycle? I love the freedom of being outside on
wheels. Racing is a blast especially because I came to bike racing 2013 after a 20 year hiatus from any kind of competitive sport. So doing it now, in my late 50s is especially sweet.

2- What do you love about riding and racing your bicycle for Hagerty?
So many fun people ride and race for Hagerty and it has the largest concentration of female cyclists in the region – what’s not to love?

3- What are some of your proudest moments or biggest accomplishments, on the bike and in life?
Racing mountain bikes is something I never envisioned myself doing ever – racing 100 miles on a mountain bike? Especially never, I’ve completed 3 now, 2 Lumberjacks and the X100. I consider myself a student of the sport (bikes and life) so I still have a lot to learn and accomplish.

4- Please tell us something about yourself and your life off the bike. What are your hobbies, what do
you do for work, tell us something about yourself that we don't know?
Hobby: Gardener – flowers and food. I love digging in the dirt and watching things grow.
Work: A chef turned lunch lady consultant I am self employed since moving to Michigan in 2006. I focus on the food system – specifically how to change our school food system. It is an always changing and challenging project nationwide. www.lunchlessonsllc.com

Something you don’t know: I am director of operations for The Chef Ann Foundation www.chefannfoundation.org and my biggest brain dump was accomplished in 2014 in the rebuild of The Lunch Box www.thelunchbox.org – a program that is dedicated to offering free open source tools and resources for school districts to use in changing their processed food programs to cooking real food from scratch for kids. In 2016 I’ll be traveling to six states doing school food assessments to help district serve more “Real Food”.
Breanne Fortuna2018-10-26T15:34:54+00:002024-03-29T10:14:39+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/breanne-fortuna/
I love the sense of freedom I get when I ride, especially while screaming down a hill at speeds bordering on reckless. Plus the camaraderie amongst the lady Hags is a rare and special thing - a healthy blend of support and competition.

Riding for Hagerty is definitely a point of pride. I've worked at the company for a little over four years and really started to get involved in cycling last fall. They offer so many opportunities to get involved that there's really no good reason not to. As a working mom, I took advantage of the 40 minute lunchtime classes and was won over by Melissa Socia's dedication and approachability as an instructor. Marci Bultemeier and Amy Jenema also took me under their wing and have been nothing but supportive and welcoming. I can't thank them, and all the other lady Hags, enough for being so damn great.

So far on the bike, I'd have to say my proudest moment is finishing a late-wave start at Iceman 2014. Most painful experience since childbirth. Proudest moment off the bike? My daughter, Harper, and my husband, Craig.

I definitely have too many hobbies. I love to garden, and would love to someday own a farm. Growing up, I played volleyball, basketball and soccer, and I still play quite a lot of volleyball during the winter months. It's by far my favorite sport aside from biking. I also really enjoy playing guitar and piano, and singing not so well while I do those things.
Valerie Hyrman2018-10-26T15:33:50+00:002024-03-29T12:36:38+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/valerie-hyrman/
I'm entering my second year of racing for Hagerty, and I have to say I've come a long way from that girl who knew absolutely nothing about bike racing. I've always loved going fast, and I'm a super competitive person, so translating that into training, strategy, and racing has been a fun challenge.

The team has been such a great resource for a person like me, from having company on training rides, racing alongside teammates, and learning the ins and outs of racing to win. I've especially appreciated having such a strong women's team to ride with. My first crit win is definitely a stand-out moment for me; all those hours of training and learning finally paid off! Aside from riding, I've always loved anything outdoors, eating delicious food, and enjoying the company of good people. I'm also part of a graphic art production team at a national company that's based locally.
Jennifer Brown2018-10-26T15:33:01+00:002024-03-29T04:01:07+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/jennifer-brown/
What I love about riding my bike is being able to walk out the door and ride away, for an hour, or 4 hours, through pastoral rolling hills and past awe inspiring views of Lake Michigan. My bike is my freedom and peace. I also love that it brings me into contact with people from all different walks of life who have one big thing in common, their passion for bikes.

When it comes to racing, I love the process of preparing, planning a season's schedule, setting up a training plan, and getting out there with my teammates to execute. There's a great sense of accomplishment from setting a goal, be it for one race or a whole season, and reaching it. Or not reaching it and learning from that how to be better, faster, stronger the next time. It's a great way to role model for my kids what you can achieve once you set your mind to it.

Being on the Hagerty team has been vital to improving my cycling skills. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience to tap into, with so many great cyclists on the team. From skills clinics to race day carpooling, there is a sense of camaraderie and openness that can't be replaced. Go Blue!!

My biggest accomplishment on my bike was coming close to winning the State Road Championship in my first season of racing. My next big accomplishment will be completing a gravel race and turning in a good performance after two crashes on gravel last season. Exercising mind over matter takes a lot of energy and commitment, but I'm up for the challenge!

When I'm not on my bike, I like to write, and I have a poem being published in an upcoming anthology titled Ride 3. I also like to read fiction, spend time with my family on the beach or on the snow, and nordic ski race. I have worked for a mortgage insurance company in underwriting operations management for the past thirteen years.
Susan Vigland2018-10-26T15:29:27+00:002024-03-27T05:02:28+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/susan-vigland/
Category 1 Road

I love riding my bike! Whether I’m riding my commuter bike to work, riding my road bike in Leelanau County, riding my 29er in the woods or my fat bike in the snow - I love ‘em all! I love the sense of freedom I feel on a bike. I love the speed. I love having different bikes to choose from, depending on the time of year and my mood. Most of all, I love all of the wonderful people I’ve met through cycling over the years – many of them who are on our team and a part of our wonderful TC cycling community.

I have raced on the Hagerty Cycling team since its inception in 2007. I had a blast road racing with my teammates for six years – chasing races all over the state. Recently, I’ve focused more on racing in the dirt. My two favorite local rides are the Tuesday Night Ride, which I’ve been participating in for over 10 years and Speed of Light. These weekly group rides (races, really!) provide all of my favorite things in a ride/race – fast, competitive, technical, strategic and fun. And the best thing is riding with a bunch of awesome people twice a week!

My proudest moment on a bike…I’ve been lucky enough to have many proud moments on a bike. My most recent is having the fastest women’s time in the Iceman in 2015. I posted the 6th fastest time of the day, including the Pro Women. I trained hard for that goal and it paid off. I had the race of my life.

Besides cycling, my hobbies are Nordic skiing, alpine skiing, sailing and gardening. Something you may not know about me…I taught skiing and snowboarding in Telluride, Colorado for five years. My claim to fame is teaching Joe Montana and his wife to snowboard!
Bridgett Widrig2018-10-26T15:27:01+00:002024-03-28T19:53:17+00:00adminhttps://hagertycycling.com/blog/author/admin/https://hagertycycling.com/blog/bridgett-widrig/
I was out on a training ride in Leelanau county about six years ago training for the Cherry Roubaix road race when I happened to meet Sue Vigland.

After that fateful day I have had the opportunity to fly the Hagerty colors all over our state. From racing in the Upper Penninsula to racing the Iceman Pro womens race. I have privileged to be on a team in a thriving community that supports it local athletes. W
hen I am not racing I love to Slalom Water Ski and relax at home.
